A Recommendation

Going back a while I have to recommend John Cason of Californian Classics.  He was very knowledgeable, continues to help, and insisted on showing me all the faults in the car he sold me! How unusual is that.  His details are in an earlier post.

Some initial work

The first thing we did was to bend and refit some panels such as the door, bonnet and boot.  The was done with various pieces of rubber, hammers and manual heaving.  The object of the exercise was to get the panels fitting prior to taking the off for spraying.  Here is Karl using a compressor to blow dust off of the car.  As you can see some parts have already been removed.

The journey home

Having collected the Porsche I drove home with a friend, Karl Palmer, following.  We were going from Portishead to Skipton, a journey of 225 miles.  At a petrol stop on the way Karl noticed that the indicators and brake lights were not working so fiddled about with the fuse and they sprang into life.  The rest of the journey went smoothly.  When I arrived back at work everyone was excited and had a good look round.  I felt that I had had a full body workout!
This photo is from a few days later when work had started on the refurb, filling had started and the removal of some of the parts.

More photos in original status

Another photo of the original condition.  This is the door with the blistering and poor fit.

Original Photos

The car was imported from California where it had one previous owned.  All the numbers matched and apart from a respray everything was original.

There were some dings and scratches and the drivers door wasn't fitting exactly right.

First find your Porsche

Having decided on a mid-sixties Porsche 911 the next job was to find one.  It turns out that between 1964 and 1969 around 15,000 cars were produced so not easy to find one.  In looking for a 911 I came across the 912 which in the same period sold twice as many.  The 912 used a de-tuned 1600 4-cylinder 356 engine in a 911 body.  It looks identical to to a 911 and looked like it would be easier to find one in the right condition.

Day Zero

It all satarted with a conversation between myself and the 'creatives'.  I'd got rid of my Mini Cooper and BMW motorbike and was sharing with my wife Sally.  The topic of a car for me came up and there was a long and stupid discussion.  The upshot was that the 'perfect' car for me was deemed to be a 1965 Porsche 911.  To this day I'm still not sure why other than 'it suits you'.
